1 Mark out the tree in a thin solution of blue, using a hog bristle bright. Notice how I have kept the outline simple, to show the main clumps of foliage.

2 Paint the sky behind with blue, white and a touch of green. Use blue with green and a little Crimson Alizarin for the dark parts of the tree, including the trunk.

3 Lay in your medium tones next, using yellow with green, a touch of Crimson Alizarin and some white. Work this over most of the tree, keeping the mix ‘dry’.

4 Finally, add the light parts with a small, soft brush: yellow with white and a touch of green. The colour should be a light yellow-green, with plenty of white in it, and you should keep the paint thick. Add the trunk by mixing yellow with a little Cadmium Red, a touch of green and some white.
